Having been to many competitions, my heart always goes out to the team that has the cheer competition catastrophe.  As the spectators sit and watch a stunt group collapse onto the floor or the flyer that never seemed to steady in the mount, an unspeakable sigh comes across the crowd.   We can only all imagine how they feel.  Worst of all, they push on to finish the routine only to run off the floor in tears.
At first, the team seems to stands united with hugs and words of encouragement.   After the dust settles, how does the team handle the defeat?  There are words of encouragement that may go on deaf ears.  Your team member may just need some time for the embarrassment and hurt to subside.  The worst thing to do is to continue to talk about the situation and cause more distress.  Holding a grudge or gossiping about the failure will drive a wedge between team members and the feelings will escalate into anger, fear and loneliness.  Having team drama before competition is a sure sign that more failures are on the way.  Don’t be surprised that the judges will see that the team is not having fun anymore and just going through the motions.
Be positive.  Sometimes it takes a few failures to make a team stronger.  At times failures cause the team to be more determined to win.  The team may work harder and stick together to continue to push on and strive for perfection.  No matter how hard the fall or the failure, it is the true champions that will smile and achieve the win.  There are times that the fall may not affect the teams overall score or ranking.  The faster the recovery and ability to bounce back could mean a win instead of a lose.  Remember, be proud and be a team!
