So you really want to make the cheerleading team? Do you know what it takes? Some of you have been through grueling tryouts and others have not. Being prepared, in shape and knowing what to expect helps cut down those butterflies in your stomach. Cheerleaders are required to have stamina, strength and flexibility, so make sure you have prepared well in advance for cheerleading tryouts.

You want to make sure you are a strong performer which does not mean you have to strive to be the best, but you do have to standout and be recognized by the judges. If you are the cheerleader with the best tumbling or maybe the strongest voice, you can score extra points for your special expertise. Remember, a team is not made up of all the same talents. The judges will be choosing cheerleaders such as strong bases and great balancers for the flyers. Focus on your strengths and make sure you have refined those skills.

Tryout Tips
•Remember to warm up, and stretch to get your muscles limber.
•Be quick to catch on to the moves, remember the routine, so pay attention.
•Nervousness will be recognized so be enthusiastic, loud and confident and remember to smile.
•Dress appropriately in your school colors with cheerleading shoes, basic shorts, plain tshirt/tank top, no jewelry, and absolutely no cell phones.
•Keep your hair out of your face in a high tight pony.
•Use natural makeup this is not a competition.
•Have clean tight arm motions, stunts, tumbling and jumps.
•Maintain eye contact and use facials to show your enthusiasm

Maintain your confidence throughout the tryouts even if you make a mistake. Maintaining your calm demeanor will prove you are cut out for the failures as well as the wins. Stick in there and work hard to prove you have the stamina and dedication needed to support your home team. Remember, a champion needs motivation above and beyond winning and that comes from within.
